How do I calculate timesheet hours in Excel?
Use =(End−Start)×24 after formatting cells as time, e.g. =(B2−A2)*24 gives decimal hours. Or skip the formulas and use this calculator — results are identical.
Should timesheets use decimal hours?
Yes — most payroll systems (ADP, Gusto, QuickBooks) expect decimal hours like 8.25 rather than 8:15. Divide minutes by 60 to convert: 15 min = 0.25.
How do I handle overnight shifts?
If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift crosses midnight. Our calculator detects this automatically and adds 24 hours.
